Ride the lightning: The new wave of electric mobility in India

It’s a hard truth, but even harder to deny: not only are fossil fuels expensive, highly polluting commodities, but also world supplies are not limitless. Many are very aware of this fact, automakers prime among them. Yet, appropriate alternatives to fossil fuel-powered individual vehicles are few. Mass transit is a wonderful thing, but there is little chance it will ever be enough to meet all transport needs. However, there has to be a way of slashing oil consumption without losing the freedom of privately owned vehicles. The answer may very well lay with electric vehicles.

Admittedly, electric vehicles are hardly popular in India right now. A combination of early-technology, inadequately priced offers and poor customer experience has bridled their penetration of the Indian car market. Yet, this may be about to change; first and foremost because a new generation of electric cars is about to hit the roads. Actually, Indian automakers have been doing business on the electric vehicle market for quite some time. After all, Reva Electric Car Company, an Indian venture, built the very first mass-produced electric car. Now things are reaching a new scale as an Indian and a German automaker, through their respective governments, have launched a joint initiative to manufacture electric vehicles.

The political support does not stop here, as recently announced by Minister of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises Praful Patel, the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 should be launched by July this year. The mission intends to promote electric mobility and boost the numbers of electric vehicles on Indian roads by 2020. Considering the likely increase of personal vehicle ownership in the country during the same period, a breakthrough on the electric vehicle market would be rosy news for a greener future.
